Nature in the Garage

Wallis

Nature in the Garage is an exhibition presented by Gallery 1313, in conjunction with liveARTs, that explores uncommon curiosities within the urban core of the City of Toronto, which runs for 6 weeks from June 29 to August 6, 2006. The exhibition utilizes the common garden shed, placed in a few strategic, downtown areas, where artists expand on interpreting the conditions of our natural environment within an urban reality. Janet Bellotto curates a group of artists from Canada and abroad as they explore and enchant through their created environments. Planned as one of the City of Toronto's signature cultural events, for the campaign Live with Culture 2006; which will include a slue of other events, Nature in the Garage partnered with Gallery 1313 and promises to be an exciting addition to our summer programming.

Nature in the Garage artists include:

Mary Anne Barkhouse (Ontario), Catherine Bodmer (Montreal), María Fernanda Cardoso (Columbia/Australia), John Dickson (Toronto), Noel Harding (Toronto), Gwen MacGregor (Toronto), Tsubaki Noboru (Japan), and Diing-Wuu Walis Wu (Taiwan).

Sites include: Fort York, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Gallery 1313, City Hall and Harbourfront.

The use of the shed counterpoints a common cultural icon, found in many backyards. For this exhibition it becomes the dream sphere - an object to capture, framing time - where visitors can experience the narratives and representations
constructed by the artists. The consideration of using multiple sites is advantageous in the way that it gets the public to move from one part of the city to another.

Three exhibit rooms in Gallery 1313 are to be used in conjunction with the exhibition. In the main gallery, monitors will be hooked to a live portal that will be documenting the various storage sheds in their locations. This allows the Gallery to be a central hub of information as well as being able to provide and guide visitors through the exhibition. In the Process gallery, documentation from the exhibition's set-up & creation process will be viewed. As its name implies, it is about the process and journey of the creation of artworks, artists and other individuals involved who make it happen. Lastly, in the Cell gallery, Janet Bellotto will be curating a small offshoot exhibition that stems from similar ideas about nature and urbanity. The artist's works in Nature in the Garage aim to inspire and are no less than compelling works of contemporary art.

POLAROID RAGE: A Survey of Polaroids by Bruce LaBruce, 2001 2006

IM003956.JPG

POLAROID RAGE
EXHIBITION: As the Polaroid format will soon be going the way of the Dodo, I decided it was time to present a survey of the Polaroid series I have been doing over the past five years. In 2001, I participated in an art happening in Los Angeles called Platinum Oasis, in which forty artists were each assigned a room in a sleazy crack hotel in Hollywood called The Coral Sands to create an installation/performance over an 18-hour period. The theme of the event was Sexual Repulsive. For my installation I re-created a Redrum room, bloody murder crime scene. At that time I had been shooting models for jerk-off magazines such as Honcho and Inches for a couple of years, so I decided to shoot a porn star in the room covered in blood as a tribute to my experiences. For me it was an expression of my ambivalence toward the porn world, a hyperbolic critique of the exploitative nature of both the adult and mainstream entertainment industries, and a cathartic acting out of a lot of personal unspecified rage. After the shoot, I invited the throngs of people who attended the event to enter the bloody room and pose on the bed for a Polaroid, providing them with the choice of either a machete or a rifle as a prop. I was surprised how thoroughly people inhabited the role of victimizer or victim (with couples it was interesting to see how they negotiated who would play which role), and how gleefully and pleasurably they participated in the violent scenario.

At a second Platinum Oasis a year later at the same location, this time with a Pasolini theme, I created another bloody room with a very real looking dead body (a Hollywood prop) standing in for the body of Pasolini after he had been run over a dozen times or more in the suburbs of Rome. I first staged a photo shoot with a porn star wearing a pig mask and a business suit and eventually splattered in blood, an allusion to the Pasolini film Porcile. Then I had the public pose for Polaroids wearing pig masks lying on the bed with the Pasolini stand-in body.

The third in the Polaroid series was staged at the Powerball in 2002 at the Power Plant in Toronto. This time I wanted to create a more purely sexual atmosphere, so I invited my friends Sasha, the Eye sex columnist and intellectual burlesque performer, and Justus, boy-about-town, to act as sex-crazed models with whom the upper crust members of the Toronto Art establishment would pose.

The fourth Polaroid series was part of a solo show I had last summer at Peres Projects, the gallery that represents me in Los Angeles. The show was partly comprised of screen captures of various revolutionary slogans from my movie The Raspberry Reich mixed with blow-ups of found terrorist imagery. At the opening of the event, I staged another live photo shoot in the basement in front of blow-ups of a corrupted version of the logo of the RAF, the infamous seventies German terrorist group.

As an extra bonus, I present two small Polaroid sets. The first was taken after a rather unsuccessful performance at the Warhol Museum. I tried to stage one of my bloody porn photo shoots, but I got the blood recipe wrong so it just looked like the models were rolling around in corn syrup. Afterwards the models took a group shower in the basement of the museum as a security guard happily looked on, a fun moment that I captured in Polaroid. The second set was taken as part of my installation at last year¹s TAAFI at the Drake Hotel in Toronto. The wonderful artist/girl-about-town known as Rayne posed in the bloody room with a blood-spattered white telephone, re-enacting classic poses of Hollywood Melodrama. The piece was called Women in Revolt.

REVELRY - A fundraiser to benefit Gallery 1313

It’s springtime in the city, time to get outside, to dance, to make merry, time for Revelry. So, Gallery 1313 threw a party to raise funds for the coming year. Everyone dusted off their old party dresses, put on their dancing shoes and came out to support Gallery 1313. The events for the evening included a live auction of artworks by prominent local artists, several raffles as well as food, drink and Revelry of all sorts. Thanks to everyone who donated their artwork and to all of our volunteers. The night was a big success, raising over $1,200 for the gallery.
