South African-born, Toronto-based artist ROMI SAMUELS herds an exciting collection of wild beasts into Toronto’s premier indie west end art gallery, Gallery 1313, for her solo show titled “The Lion, the Watch and the Wardrobe” which, as the name suggests also includes “portraits” of clothing and accessories found in any wardrobe …and a pocket watch!

Romi Samuels

Her oversized canvases of giraffes, elephants, zebra, crocodiles and, of course, lions, feature bold brush strokes and lots of texture in black & white with the occasional hint of colour. The smaller and more intimate wardrobe paintings feature pastel colours painted on board.

Romi’s work features distortions, thick paint and strong colours. Her creative inspirations include the great South African painters Irma Stern, Wolf Kibel, and Maggie Laubser who were strongly influenced by the teachings of the German expressionists.
